Woman dies after being impaled by beach umbrella on windy beach - al.com

A woman was killed Wednesday after a loose beach umbrella impaled her in the chest, authorities said.

The umbrella was blown from its anchoring by wind around 12:40 p.m. and hit Tammy Perreault while she was at Garden City Beach, South Carolina, Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said. Perreault, 63, died about an hour later at the hospital from chest trauma.

“This is a terrible loss, and we know our community is hurting,” Thomas Bell, a spokesperson for Horry County Emergency Management, said. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim as they navigate through this difficult time.”

Beach umbrellas have a spiked end that held them go into the sand but their wide canopy allows them to get caught in the wind if they are not anchored property, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The federal agency estimates about 3,000 people are injured by beach umbrellas each year.
