Escape the crowds, and head to this abandoned beach on the small island of Geiger Key.

Tucked on the southernmost point on the Overseas Highway (US 1) just a 12.5-mile north of Key West lies the far cry Geiger Key. This small island has many off-the-beaten attractions like mangrove swamps for nature lovers looking to unplug from the hustle and bustle of the cities. For a less crowded summer vacation, where one can soak up the pleasant sunshine, and laze on the pristine sandy beach, consider the unmobbed stretches of Geiger Key Beach (also called Boca Chica Beach). The beach is a hidden spot accessed by a washed-out road, which has never been repaired after the damage caused by a hurricane many years ago.

While the Florida Keys have some best beaches, thankfully the Boca Chica Beach is one of the few beaches that is not tainted by commercialism. The pristine Boca Chica Beach is very rustic and is perfect to unwind if one is looking for a tranquil setting away from the prying eyes. Love birds might find this place perfect if they are looking for an intimate, and wild setting to relax.

Some years ago Boca Chica Beach was unfortunately hit by a hurricane, and remnants of that unfateful event can still be seen. Besides its pristine outlook, the beach has a dash of a post-apocalyptic landscape. One can still spot a line of telephone poles running along the rugged coast. Another interesting thing about this place is that there is a wall for lost shoes, worn-out boats, and dens made up of stacked rocks and corals. These were all created by adventurous visitors.

On the other side, there is also the blue water, white sandy beach, and the serene setting, which lure beach-goers in summer. Relax on the sun-soaked beach and enjoy the warmth of the sun, and then take a refreshing plunge in the clear water.

Since the beach is pretty remote and very wild. There are no entrance fees and no convenient amenities to rely on. So don’t expect to find beach amenities such as showers, restrooms, or food concessions.

Be prepared and well-equipped before arriving at Boca Chica Beach. Bring along convenient items such as a beach chair, towels, beach umbrella, sunscreens, flip-flops, hats, an insulated bag to keep food, and a garbage bag.

It’s pretty easy to reach the beach by car. One should head to the north via US 1 from Key West. Drive until one reaches mile marker 12.5, and spot a gas station and a Circle K store. At this point turn to the right towards the Boca Chica Road, and then continue driving until the end of the road. Eventually, spot the beach area lined up with some lush green trees on the left side of the road. Stop there in a makeshift parking lot. From this point continue by foot at the partial wash-out road.

Another attraction to consider is the Geiger Key Marina to find some delicious food apart from the Key Lime Pie, which isn’t the only food that the Florida Keys is known for. At the Geiger Key Marina, one can find Hogfish tacos, smoked fish dips, and of course mouth-watering lobsters. Additionally, visitors will find an RV Park to rent.
